Choosing the Right Filter for Your Residential HVAC System

March 25, 2020

Your furnace, heat pump or air conditioner has a filter that captures dust, dirt and other tiny particles. These filtration units not only improve your Cookeville home’s indoor air quality, but they also extend the system’s lifespan. Here are three tips for choosing the right filter for your HVAC system.

Look at Your Owner’s Manual

Your heat pump, furnace or air conditioner’s owner’s manual explains the size requirements for the filtration unit. It also offers a diagram of where the filtration unit is and how to access it. Be sure to choose the correct size of the filtration unit, and insert it in the proper orientation. Our technicians can do this for you during a routine maintenance visit for your heating or cooling system.

Consider the MERV Rating

MERV stands for minimum efficiency reporting value. It refers to the size of particles that the filtration unit can capture. The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particles the unit removes from the air. Choose the highest MERV rating you can find. Filtration units with high MERV ratings could remove bacteria, pollen, pet dander and viruses from your home’s air. The more particles the filtration unit removes, the better your indoor air quality.

Select a Style

Filtration units are available in disposable and washable options. If you like the convenience of simply removing the old unit and tossing it out, a disposable one is a wise choice. They are low-cost and come in a wide range of sizes suitable for all makes and models of heating and cooling systems. If you don’t mind washing the filtration unit, you could spend a little more upfront on a reusable unit. They only take a few minutes to clean. Both styles will improve your home’s indoor air quality.
