How Geothermal Heat Pumps Work

A geothermal heat pump is a dual-purpose climate control system that uses the stable temperatures found deep underground to heat and cool your home. During the heating season, the system takes heat from its underground loop and brings it into your house; during the cooling season, it takes from your house and releases it into the ground. There are three main configurations of geothermal heat pumps:

  • Horizontal Loop: Usually preferred for residential installation, the horizontal loop is buried relatively shallow, about 10 feet underground. Horizontal loops are relatively economical to install, but they can lose some efficiency in extreme temperatures and require a significant amount of land to install.
  • Vertical Loop: Vertical loops are installed deep underground, 50 feet deep or more. They require more excavation and thus higher installation costs but take up less space and are more efficient. Vertical loops are generally used for commercial properties and in urban areas.
  • Water Loop: If you have a pond or other water feature on your property, we may be able to install a water loop that provides exceptionally efficient heating and cooling, depending on the depth of the water.
